English version below
Introduzione editoriale

Campi scientifici e tecnici | 302.900 studenti (71%) |
Campi letterari e scienze umane | 123.700 studenti (29%) |
Totale | 2026: 426.637 (100%) |

INDIRIZZO/SEZIONE | CARATTERISTICHE PRINCIPALI |

E i professionisti...

The Moroccan education system and the underestimation of the humanities
A descriptive and analytical approach to the baccalaureate section
Introductory note
A careful and dynamic analysis of transnational school profiles offers the opportunity to reflect in detail on the prospects and structural criticalities of our socio-educational contexts and systems. The valuable contribution by prof. Rachid Bekkaj – a sociologist, former professor at Mohammed V University in Rabat and currently at the Moroccan Center for Audiovisual Studies – concerning the secondary education system in Morocco and hosted in TecnoSofia & Pragma – La Bottega dell’Innovazione Educativa, outlines with professional descriptive and sociological clarity the tensions running through baccalaureate pathways, highlighting a progressive devaluation of traditional humanities in favor of newer scientific and technical hubs.
Within this scenario lies a profound cultural short circuit: while global modernity and technological hyper-specialization push toward a functional, market-oriented education, the fruitful encounter between the Euro-Mediterranean tradition and vibrant North African pedagogical debate hands back a shared urgency. Far from being an isolated specificity, the marginalization of critical thought directly challenges the Italian and European educational tradition. Historically founded on humanism, our system experiences a similar pressure today, torn between the performative anxiety of competencies and the technocratization of curricula. Rediscovering that ideal heritage rooted in classical humanistic culture—the authentic cradle of a civilization where a sense of limits and responsibility return to being indispensable cornerstones—does not mean looking nostalgically to the past, but rather placing the person and their freedom at the center.
TecnoSofia & Pragma proposes this essay as a space for dialogue and mutual recognition across the different shores of the Mediterranean. Questioning the status of the humanities in the Moroccan context amounts, for the Italian school system, to rediscovering its original vocation: denouncing the global systemic risk that reduces the educational institution to a mere training agency, losing that capacity to question the meaning of technology, politics, and the human that constitutes the foundation of every mature democracy.

by Rachid Bekkaj
Although the humanities, including philosophy, sociology, and history, have proven their importance in the development of societies, and their study and dissemination are hallmarks of individual awareness, they remain the least valued in the Moroccan education system. Therefore, examining the status of these disciplines among students, their parents, and their teachers is crucial for understanding the social context of this situation. This query also intends to gather information about the future of education and the academic sector in Morocco, along with their connection to the future of Moroccan society and its members.
From this perspective, the following questions arise:
Why do these disciplines appear less appealing and less valuable than the natural and technical sciences?
How does the education system reinforce this perception that makes these disciplines seem less important than other scientific fields?
And how does critical thinking decline when technical education is prioritized at the expense of philosophical thought?
To answer these questions, we chose to conduct a descriptive analysis of some data related to the 2026 Baccalaureate programs presented by the Ministry of National Education, Kindergartens, and Sports.
To better understand this reality, it is crucial to rely on the official rates for the year 2026 provided by the Ministry of National Education, Preschool, and Sports. These rates include both the public and private sectors.
The Moroccan education system, overseen by the Ministry of National Education, Early Childhood, and Sports, is compulsory from ages six to fifteen. It is structured around fundamental learning cycles and involves both the public and private sectors. In Morocco, the education sector is a major employer of skilled professionals, with more than 250,000 teachers in the public domain and countless others in private employment.
Humanities Track
By choosing this stream, students benefit from a high weighting for the following subjects: Arabic, history-geography, philosophy, and modern languages (French and English). The humanities curriculum spans the entire secondary education path, encompassing both the common core and the first two years of the undergraduate cycle. The term "terminale" refers to the stage reached at the end of a schooling journey that begins in kindergarten and continues through primary and secondary education to high school.

An inspection of the table detailing the diverse high school pathways—as compiled by the Ministry of Education—identifies the insufficient inclusion of the humanities (sociology, history, and philosophy). These disciplines appear at the very bottom of the list, reflecting a form of denial: the tendency to regard only the natural sciences as genuine scientific disciplines, while undervaluing the human sciences and relegating them to a subordinate position.

The table groups together the success rates for different fields of study, but the ministry has not published a detailed breakdown of the specific success rate for the humanities. The Moroccan Ministry of National Education does not publish separate national statistics specifically for girls in the humanities, but the overall success rate for girls reached 84.5% across all subjects at the end of the 2026 session.
The three external factors are the basis of the devaluation of the humanities
One cannot fail to recognise that a multitude of factors contribute to the devaluation of the humanities, more than education itself, due to public policies and industrial capitalism. The latter has transformed production into a capitalist priority, encouraging massive material consumption. Moreover, there are, additionally, the viewpoints of students, parents, and individuals with a stake, as they often highlight.
That is why it was essential to interview three distinct groups of people: the learner in the field of humanities (the students of the humanities baccalaureate) and the parents of students in the field of natural sciences as well as professionals
According to the students
Students from other fields tend to largely underestimate and neglect the humanities. According to them, the humanities track is "too easy" compared to theirs, and as a result, they believe they have to work twice as hard to succeed. For students in the technical track, the humanities are perceived as "unproductive," and their value is completely underestimated. It is indeed more complex to be "educated" in the humanities than in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Professionally writing in humanities demands a wider knowledge base, a more creative approach to analysis, and enhanced writing abilities.
High school students preparing for a baccalaureate in the humanities are confronted with the influence of religious traditions, often exerted by their parents, peers from other disciplines, and sometimes even certain teachers. Parents generally want their children to attend modern schools while maintaining religious instruction within the curriculum. It is worth noting that in Morocco, there are traditional Quranic schools (msid) where children learn to memorize the Quran, as well as religious institutions (madrassa) offering in-depth Islamic education.
Professionals confirm that there is a discrepancy between the curriculum guidelines for teaching literature in Moroccan high schools and the actual teaching practices observed in classrooms
Parents of students in the natural and technical sciences tracks
The responsibility of parents is paramount in the education of their children, especially during their school years. The sociological investigation into student inclusion consistently underscores the influence of parents on each child's life path, their life stories, and their capability to engage with and absorb knowledge.
It is therefore essential to emphasise the involvement of parent representatives in the students' journeys.
According to the parents of natural science students, social sciences are non-existent and only the fields of natural sciences (biology, chemistry, physics, astronomy, geology, etc.) are considered true sciences. Parents have entrusted their children's future to the fields of natural and technical sciences, believing it to be the pathway to a promising future.
Among parents who have the means, choosing private schooling for their children weighs heavily on their imagination as well as on the children's behaviour. The parents of these students emphasise the fact that the Moroccan nation is predominantly Muslim, and since Morocco is a land of Islam, the head of state is a king, sultan, and Commander of the Faithful.
Therefore, they contend that the social and human sciences, stemming from the West, foster doubt and critique towards the basis of religion and belief.
This situation brings the definition of the student to the surface and raises questions about the identity and functioning of the student. Is it an individual independent of their sexual identity? Is the student referring to a transitional period? Does the term "student" not have an ideological connotation that conceals the distinction between "students" rather than taking it into account? Why consider the student as an individual who is forced to follow a program without having to give their opinion? How to recognise that the student is a human being with their own needs, impulses, freedom of speeck and to think differently?
And the professionals
According to professionals, the humanities and even some parts of the social sciences are not only neglected but are often aggressively ostracised, both by administrations that also seek to eliminate them. The disciplines of the humanities and social sciences (such as history, philosophy, and sociology) are frequently considered less relevant compared to the demands of the job market and economic viability. Diminished prestige: Educators occasionally confront a decline in social standing and diminished acknowledgment of their contributions, when contrasted with fields like science or technology.
It is indeed a political will that seeks to indoctrinate students to form loyal cadres in the service of the theocratic state in order to ensure control over the entire social body.
Four elements according to professionals that explain the minimisation of the humanities:
In Morocco, the rise of strict Islamist movements has led to the marginalisation of the humanities, to the exclusive benefit of Islamic studies. The humanities have long been viewed as a potential threat or corrupting force stemming from the West.
This shows that the humanities are not sufficiently valued in Morocco. The history of these sciences shows how the Institute of Sociology in Rabat, which was founded in 1959 within Mohammed V University, ceased to operate in 1973 by a political decision.
Morocco, being less developed compared to the colonising countries, is subjected to a certain form of prejudice regarding the level of intelligence its inhabitants should possess.
Morocco is experiencing a new phase of cultural and intellectual alienation due to modern global powers and a lack of intellectual immunity. Simply ask a librarian about the most popular books, and they will tell you they are books on the natural sciences. At the university level, even the least requested and read books are those belonging to the humanities. Readers often prefer to buy a novel rather than a book on philosophy or the humanities, thus avoiding intellectual effort, the feeling of being less cultured, or the complexity of ideas found in philosophical texts. Due to their inclination towards simplicity and shallow contemplation.
What can we learn from this data?
It can be stated that the treatment of the educational system in Morocco is associated with decentralisation, which requires a comprehensive approach that will lead to an interconnected school in an interconnected environment. There is no denying that this method incorporates scientific, cultural, and political elements to help the learner proceed correctly.
The data illustrate the validity of the criticism on certain aspects. Each perspective from students, parents, and professionals shows warning signs indicating a deterioration in academic knowledge, fuelled by a broader questioning of the usefulness of the humanities, which has persisted for years. To enhance the humanities' value, emphasizing their direct impact on analyzing contemporary issues and fostering their collaboration with other academic disciplines should be prioritized.
It is therefore not a simple task of technical or scientific expertise that would allow for the revaluation of the humanities, but a social and political process that is all the more open to the sociological situation of society and the future of generations to come. Any approach in this perspective is not limited to a technical issue with often poorly defined boundaries but also encompasses various economic, political, and social challenges, according to broad sociological interests.
Conclusion
To summarise; in a society dominated by superstition and charlatanry, where religious belief in its various forms opposes any possibility of renewed thought based on the right to critique, and where rational social and political structures, modernity, and intellectual development are suppressed, and where illiteracy is rampant, choosing the humanities becomes a struggle. Accept true philosophy stems neither from ignorance, nor can discerning minds operate under a regime of fear, nor will differing viewpoints when intellectual liberty is withheld.
Choosing an educational system where the humanities are the cornerstone means striving to build a society where its members are free. There's one thing that hasn't been accomplished in the present educational framework, and this impedes the way for both human and economic progress in Morocco.
